About Our Organization
Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children reach their full potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with measurable impact.
Children who are mentored are:
52% less likely to skip school
46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
37% less likely to skip a class
27% less likely to begin using alchol
More confident of their performance in school work
One-third less likely to hit someone
More trusting of their parents and guardians
In Orange County, we serve children who are ages 6-14, often in a single parent or guardian headed household, who want and need a mentor. Special outreach and eligibility consideration is given to children ages 4-18 who have a parent who is incarcerated in a state or federal prison. This is made possible through a state-wide partnership under the New York Children of Promise Program grant.
Our mentors come from all walks of life, and participate in either the community-based program (activities on the weekends 2-3 times a month), the school-based program (meet during lunch hours once a week at school) or the site-based program, (mentoring at West Point and Mount St. Mary.)
